A vehicle-pedestrian crash just west of Burnips killed a 45-year-old woman who was trying to help her dog in the road Wednesday evening.
Authorities have identified the deceased as Jennifer Counterman, who was struck by a vehicle about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday on 144th Avenue near 32nd Street.
Michigan State Police from the Wayland post said Counterman, who lives in the area in Dorr Township, was in the road after another vehicle had struck and killed the dog.
One motorist struck the dog and another motorist had stopped on 144th after the accident with the animal and one of the vehicles was stopped partially in the roadway.
A 19-year-old heading east swerved and tried to avoid the other vehicles, but did not see Counterman standing in the road struck her.
