WHS foreign exchange student wins regional tennis title

Wayland High School’s No. 1 singles tennis player Elena Campon, a foreign exchange student from Spain, won the Division 2 regional singles championship Thursday and has qualified for the Division 2 state finals next month.

She defeated her Middleville Thornapple Kellogg opponent in the finals, 6-4, 6-4.

“It’s been a long time since Wayland has had someone go to the state finals,” remarked coach Bill Schaefer.
“The team did well and had only three points from second place.”

All four singles flights won, as well as third doubles, to advance as far as the semifinal round. The competition was held Thursday at Batte Creek Harper Creek High School.

The Lady Wildcats finally wound up fourth with 12 points. They concluded their season with a 7-5-3 overall record.
