Marsman Reports: Martin school construction continues

by Austin Marsman

Friday was the last day of school for students at Martin Public Schools, as crews begin to ramp up bond project construction.

Voters in the district last August approved a $17.6 million bond proposal and since early May, Contractors have been working around students by tearing out the inefficient boiler system and starting roof replacement. The real work began in the last week of school as excavators and bulldozers move dirt ahead of the new buildings and athletic fields.

This project covers upgrades to learning environments and athletic fields as well as a new auditorium and performance gymnasium. The new gym is welcome because there is only one competition gymnasium now for practices, games and events. The planned auditorium also will be a huge investment in the arts as Martin revives the drama programs and is host for Odyssey of the Mind competitions.

Aspects of this project generating buzz in the community include a new football stadium and rooftop solar panels. Superintendent Dr. David Harnish said the project  is on track to be completed by fall 2018.
