John Sloan to fill vacancy on Wayland City Council

John Sloan, recently reJohn Sloantired counselor at Wayland High School and former assistant varsity football coach, has been appointed to the Wayland City Council seat vacated earlier this month by Ron Kobish.

Sloan is a graduate of Hope College and he served on the Wayland High School staff for many years before retiring at the end of the 2012-13 academic year.

Mayor Tim Bala said Sloan was the only applicant for the position.

Kobish announced at the May 2 meeting that he would be leaving to take a new job in the City of Auburn Hills, Mich. Kobish had more than six years on the council and several on the Planning Commission. His last meeting was Monday night, March 16.

It is hoped that Sloan can be sworn in at the April 6 council meeting. He will serve at least until the next election in November 2015, before which time he can decide to fill out the rest of the two-year term, which expires in November 2016.

Other appointments made at Monday night’s council meeting were Tim Rose to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, Judy Miller to the Wayland Area Emergency Services Board, J.D. Gonzales, John Frigmanski and Sam Dykstra to the Planning Commission and Lisa Banas to the Zoning Board of Appeals.
