Wayland school board has a flurry of meetings recently

There appears to be a flurry oschool boardf meetings activity for the Wayland Board of Education in the wake of former board member Shelly Whitley’s filing a civil rights complaint against the district.

The school board had a special meeting Monday, March 16, committee meetings Tuesday, March 17, and Thursday, March 19, and now plans to have a work session at 6 p.m. Monday, March 23, at the administration building on East Superior Street.

The board will have a special meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, March 30, at the administration building.

The meeting March 23 may include the presence of an attorney, which may prompt a closed session.

Besides being published on this on-line news service last Tuesday, the story of Whitley’s filing of a complaint as appeared on News Channel 3 and in the Detroit News in a story written by Wayland High School graduate Tony Paul.

Whitley, in her complaint, charges that the school district does not provide the Wayland varsity baseball team with the same facilities afforded the softball program, in violation of the principles of the federal Title IX program approved more than 40 years ago. She contends the baseball team has only one field on the high school/middle school campus while softball has the use of five diamonds.
