Wayland came from behind with one minute left in the ballgame to grab a thrilling victory on the road against Wyoming, 20-16.

The victory  lifted the Wildcats’ overall season record to 3-1 and 2-0 in the O-K Gold Conference.

Wyoming got of the scoreboard board on the board first in the opening quarter and took an 8-0 lead, but the Wildcats answered in the second period with 13 points to claim a 13-8 advantage at intermission.

Wayland was blessed with some big plays from Carter Morse, Carson Sevigny, Lee Misak, Seth Sevenski-Popma and Devin Jakey. The line stepped up in protection and allowed for some big plays.

With only seconds remaining in the first half, Morse connected with Jakey for a touchdown to put the ‘Cats ahead by five points.

After a few stalled drives, Wayland relied on defense for most of the second half. The Wolves, however, put together a long sustained drive to reclaim the lead at 16-13. The Wildcats answered with a big drive to punch in the winning score, aided by a huge third down conversion by Caleb Wolf.

The victory was particularly satisfying not only because it was against a league opponent, but Wyoming last year defeated the Wildcats 34-20. Wayland already has matched its season victory total from all of last year.

Wayland comes home to play South Christian next Friday in the Military Appreciation game.
