Viking boys may have a lock on 2nd, but girls slip to 3rd

The Hopkins boys’ cross-country team finished in the runner-up position for the third straight time Wednesday afternoon in the O-K Silver Conference jamboree.

However, the Lady Vikings had to settle for third place for the first time this season.

The boys had 74 points, four better than third-place Belding. Calvin Christian won it again, with 27 points.

Dan Rausch was the Vikings’ individual medalist this time with a third-place finish at 17:32.08 and Todd Henley, who usually is the first Hopkins runner, was fourth in 17:36.02. Jake Pastoor turned in a fine performance in a supporting role with a time of 19:04.76, good for 15th place. Zack Nutter was 21st in 19:24.28 and Joe Ludlam 39th.

For the girls, Laura Velderman, who didn’t run in Saturday’s Portage Invitational because she is a drum major in band, came up with her season-best time of 20:08.48, good for third place. Jasmine Fisher was was 13th, Emma Helder, another runner missing Saturday for band, was 18th, Alyssa Beilby 19th and Gracie DeZeeuw 20th.

The Lady Vikings were eded for second by Belding, 51 to 59, and Calvin Christian sprinted to first place with just 24 points.
