Wayland Union schools have annual Veterans Day ceremony

Wayland schools had their annual Veterans Day tribute and local Boy Scouts did their part by bringing vets into the ceremony in their wheelchairs.

To mark the Marine Corps’ 242nd birthday and Veteran’s Day, Wayland school’s CCA program had a celebration to thank school employee Jody Tyner for his years of service in the military.

Before his teaching career began, Tyner served in the Marine Corps as a radioman from 1992 to 1995. His tour of duty took him to the far reaches of the Pacific Ocean from Thailand to South Korea and all ports in between.

When asked about his experience he noted, “It was a brotherhood or sisterhood for all of us involved. At the time when I first joined, I wasn’t ready for college and I wanted to challenge myself in the Marine Corps. My service in the military made me a better person and teacher.”

What made this celebration extra special was it was planned by students, most notably Joseph Smith-Hendrickson. It was his idea, planning and will that culminated in a festive afternoon of cupcakes and camaraderie.
