Lady Wildcats enjoy terrific season opener at Hastings

Sam Nieuwkoop led the Lady ‘Cats with 13 points.

The Wayland girls’ varsity basketball team won only one game last season while being challenged with injuries, graduation losses and lack of experience.

The Lady Wildcats streaked to a 50-37 victory in their season opener Friday night at Hastings to match their victory total of all last year.

Wayland led 16-8 at the end of the first quarter and 32-11 at the half and was able to coast afterward.

Coach Wes Hudson said his team played a fine all-around game against the Saxons.

“The defense really set the tone for the game, holding Hastings to only 11 points at the half. The Wildcats really showed a team effort with the distribution of the basketball having nine players score.”

Leading the way for the Wildcats was Sam Nieuwkoop with 13. Chloe Coughlin, Abby Omness, and Parrish Hudson each scored eight. Sara VanderWeide chipped in 4 points, Macey Winger scored 3 points, and scoring 2 points apiece were Abby Merice, Skylar Stora and Stephanie Ainsworth.
