Lady Clippers enjoy terrific 1st half, but edged 48-46

Martin girls put together their best first half of basketball thus far this season Friday, but ultimately came up on the short end of of a 48 to 46 decision against Watervliet.

Sophomore guard Kiaya Warner put up a quick seven points, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer before halftime, as the Lady Clippers managed an impressive 25 to 11 lead at the half.

But Watervliet, reeling from the first half surprise from Martin, finally was able to take the lead late in the third quarter, led by senior Madlyn Hutchins a narrowed the score gap, totaling 12 points and teammate Ariana Rowe, who contributed 11.

After falling behind, the Lady Clippers stayed with the Panthers. A three-pointer by Jaclyn Hildebrand tied the game at 40 points with 3:20 remaining in the ballgame. The officials called two fouls on the Panthers, sending Warner to the line. Warner made two of four free throws, putting the Clippers up 42 to 40.

But in the end, the Clippers were just two points shy of a tie, and their performance at the free throw line was subpar at 44 percent.

Warner led Martin in scoring with 13 points. Jaclyn Hildebrand hustled for 12 and normally high scoring sophomore Faith Guritz was held to six.

The Lady Clippers, now 2-2 overall, will take on Zion Christian in a road game Tuesday evening.
