The Hopkins girls’ basketball team claimed its fifth straight victory of the season Tuesday by stopping O-K Silver Conference rival Grandville Calvin Christian 51-48.

The Viking boys, however, suffered a 63-53 defeat on the Squires’ floor in the third straight contest against a state-ranked team.
The girls started fast and took a 32-18 lead at intermission, but then had to fight off a furious rally to hang on to the win. They enjoyed a 16-5 cushion in the second quarter.
Mikayla Bulich once again led the Lady Vikings’ offensive effort with 16 points, Guard Brendalyn Helderop added 11 points and center Meghan Schulz contributed 10.
Calvin was led by Kayce Rypma with 17 points.
The Lady Vikings now are 6-4 for the season and haven’t lost since Dec. 19 at Hamilton. They are 3-0 in the O-K Silver Conference.
Hopkins will be at home Thursday night to take on West Michigan Lutheran and then will join the boys in resuming league play at Kelloggsville Friday night. The boys now are 6-3 overall for the season.
