Clippers sweep doubleheader vs. Bloomingdale, 12-2, 6-4

Martin took a pair of baseClipper Logo_6_4ball games from Bloomingdale Monday, winning the opener 12-2 in six innings and taking the nightcap 6-4.

Garrett Dill went the distance in the opener, giving up only three hits and one earned run. He struck out eight and walked four.

Martin scored three times in the first inning and five times in the second to put the game out of reach. The Clippers scored three times in the fourth inning and added a single run in the sixth.

Caleb Hunderman led the way with four hits. He scored four times and drove in four. Saul Altman drove in three runs, while Tanner Curry and Tyler Smith each drove in a pair. Dill scored three times to help his own cause. Martin set a new school record by recording 19 stolen bases in the game.

“We stop running when we go up by 10 runs,” said Martin coach Jon Gambee, “but until then its open season.

“We swung the bats well tonight, getting 12 hits in the contest and Dill was outstanding on the mound. He is our ace and has pitched very well all year. He had a 2.57 ERA going in tonight and he lowered it to 1.81 with tonight’s effort.”

In the nightcap, Tyler Smith went the whole way, giving up five hits, walking three and striking out six in recording his fourth win. He gave up all four runs but only two were earned.

Martin had 16 hits in the game with Scott Kerley, Garrett Altman and Dill getting three each. Hunderman had two hits as did Saul Altman. Courtesy runner Clayton Brenner scored two runs and single runs were scored by Dill, Smith, Curry and freshman Joey Verberkmoes.

The victories bring Martin’s season record to 5-7. The Clippers will travel to Bangor Thursday.
