Hopkins girls dare to give West Catholic a tussle in 6-point loss

Every once in a while, the Hopkins girls’ basketball team shows flashes of brilliance. That’s hard to believe for a team that’s 1-9 right now and hasn’t seen a winning season in quite a spell.

Yet the Lady Vikings, seemingly determined to be nobody’s dormat any more, gave Grand Rapids West Catholic a pretty fair tussle Tuesday night on the road, finally and grudgingly losing 46-40.

This is the same outfit that spanked Wyoming Lee pretty badly Monday night for its first win and the same outfit that dared to stay with a decent Allendale ballclub before finally losing by seven points, 56-49.

To be sure, Hopkins has been beaten up pretty badly by good ballclubs such as Hamilton, but there are signs of life in what was regarded not so long ago as a program in serious winning drought.

The Vikings fell behind West Catholic 10-5 in the first period, but stayed with the program to the tune of 18-12 at intermission and 31-24 after three quarters. No blowout here, folks.

Ellen Bregg netted nine points and Allie DeBoer eight for Hopkins. Libby O’Brien scored 14 for West Catholic, which is now 5-4.
