Lady Wildcats’ offense sluggish in 2-0 loss to Catholic Central

The Wayland girls’ soccer team, after falliGirls-Soccerng in overtime to first place Thornapple Kellogg Monday evening, lost 2-0 to Grand Rapids Catholic Central Wednesday night at Aquinas College.

“The Lady Wildcats took on their second top three conference foe in as many days,” coach Ben Sleeman reported. “At the end of the match, the scoreboard reflected a close game, but in actuality it was anything but.”

The coach said the Wildcats were dominated in possession and shots and rarely threatened to break down a very well-organized Cougar defense.

“The girls battled through the end of the game but were unable to find anything to make themselves a threat to equalize or get back into the game,” Sleeman said.

Hannah Anderson had 10 saves among the dozen shots on goal.

The loss brings Wayland’s overall record to 10-7-1 overall and 5-3 in conference play. The team travel Monday to Hastings to take on the Saxons, whom they narrowly beat in their first matchup.

Following the Hastings game, they have the week off before hosting Battle Creek Harper Creek in a first round district game Tuesday, May 26.
