Hopkins boys’ basketball team loses to top-ranked opponent

Viking Logo2It’s been a really rough stretch for the Hopkins boys’ basketball team, which has lost its last two encounters to two of the top teams in West Michigan.

The Vikings dropped a 75-49 decision to NorthPointe Christian Tuesday in an O-K Silver Conference matchup. NorthPointe was fresh from what officials called the biggest basketball victory in the school’s history Saturday nifght when it edged previously unbeaten Wyoming Godwin Heights. Godwin took out Hopkins last Friday.

The Vikings weren’t really in the ballgame all evening, as NorthPointe streaked to a 20-12 lead after the first period and was 39-23 at intermission before continuing to pull away.

Senior guard Ryan Pierce netted 17 points, senior forward Tyler Schulz managed to score 13 points and Jake Beck collected 10 for Hopkins.

Tyler Baker nailed six three-point field goals and ended up with 26 points for the Mustangs, now 9-1 for the campaign overall and 4-0 in O-K Silver play. Kual Nhial added 14 points and Josh Combs 10.

Hopkins, now 4-7 overall and 2-2 in league play, will try to get back on the winning track Friday evening at Kelloggsville.
