Viking boys’ hoop season ends in heartbreaking 54-53 loss

The Hopkins boys’ baskeHopkins Vikings Logotball season ended Wednesday evening in heart-breaking fashion with a one-point 54-53 loss to Paw Paw in the Class B district semifinals at South Haven.

The Vikings closed out their season with an overall record of 10-12. Paw Paw, which advances to the district title game against Otsego, is now 13-8.

Hopkins had to battle from behind throughout much of the ballgame. It trailed 11-9 after the first period and 24-20 at halftime and was down 42-38 after three quarters of play.

The Vikings certainly made it as close as possible at the end.

They got some quality balanced scoring, as senior guard Ryan Pierce led the way with a dozen points, Tyler Schulz and Isaac Kukulies both added 11 and Grant Stevens chipped in nine. It was the last Hopkins basketball game for Pierce and Schulz.

Nick Klingel dropped in 27 points for Paw Paw to top all scorers.
