Lady Wildcats score huge 1-0 upset of Catholic Central

The Wayland girls’ soccer team MondaGirls-Soccery night came up with a huge upset, knocking off Grand Rapids Catholic Central, the top team in the O-K Gold Conference and the fifth-ranked team in Division 3 at home Monday night.

The game started with Hannah Anderson and the defense keeping the visiting Cougars from finding the back of the net. Both teams battled most of the half evenly until senior Sarrah Sweeris found fellow senior Sam Taylor for the game winning goal following an Ali Cutler cross. The half ended 1-0 in favor of the home side.

The second half saw Catholic Central continue to apply pressure, but the Lady Wildcats would not concede and played together for the entire 40 minutes to hold on to the victory.

Anderson recorded the shutout victory and turned away 10 Catholic Central shots on goal.

This win brings Wayland’s overall record to 5-4-1 and 2-2 in conference play. The girls are back in action at home on Wednesday night against Hastings.
