Lady Wildcats capture 1st-ever district soccer championship

The Wayland High School varsity soccer team made history Friday evening at Byron Center by capturing its first district championship in the Lady Wildcats’ 25-year history playing the sport. The girls defeated Grand Rapids Christian 2-1  in the finals after pulling out a double overtime 2-1 thriller over the host team Wednesday. Both opponents entered the matches with far superior overall records, rendering Wayland as a bonafide Cinderella team. The Lady Wildcats will play Forest Hills Northern at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Holland in the regional semifinals. (Photos courtesy of Wendy Dunkle and Shawn Moulenbelt)
