Area Memorial Day activities, ceremonies announced

Memorial Day will be observed Monday, May 25, with ceremonies and activities planned for the Wayland, Hopkins, Martin and Dorr areas.

The following is a rundown on activities and ceremonies planned for Monday:

Wayland

Military honors ceremonies will take653231-memorial003 place at local cemeteries at 8:15 a.m. at Hooker, 8:30 a.m. at Hill, 8:55 a.m. at Native American, 9:25 a.m. at Germond, 9:40 a.m. at St. Cyril Methodius, and 10:25 a.m. at Elmwood.

The Memorial Day parade will begin at 11 a.m. in Wayland. The starting point will be at the Wayland post of the Michigan State Police, 544 N. Main St., concluding at the Wayland VFW post, 735 S. Main St. The VFW post will have a memorial service at the flagpole and then offer a pulled pork sandwich meal. Entertainment will include live music and a bounce house and cotton candy for the kids.

Hopkins Township

The annual Memorial Day Service will get under way at 10 a.m. at Maplewood Cemetery, corner of 130th Avenue and 17th Street, rain or shine. All are welcome.

Participating will be the Hopkins/Wayland VFW, Hopkins High School Band, Hopkins FFA, Sons of the Union Civil War Veterans, Hopkins Boy Scouts, and local musicians.

Dorr Township

The rifle squad will meet at 8 a.m. at the George Wagner American Legion Post No. 127 at 4310 18th St.  Visits will be made at local cemeteries: 8:30 a.m. at St. Stanislaus, 9:15 a.m. at Richter, 10 a.m. at Dorr, 10:45 a.m. at Jones, and 11:30 a.m. at Sproat.

Post 127 then will offer a chicken dinner and pork barbeque at noon, followed by bingo and kids’ games from 1 to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call (616) 681-2259.

Village of Martin

The annual Memorial Day parade lineup will be at 9:30 a.m. at the Martin High School parking lot, 1556 Chalmers St. The parade will step off at 10 a.m. and will end at the Memorial Park on 10th Street. A ceremony will follow.
