Dorr, Hopkins, and Green Lake plan 4th of July celebrations

The communities of Dorr, Hopkins and Green Lake will have their annual Fourth of July celebrations the weekend of Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 3, 4 and 5, A variety of food, fun and entertainment will highlight the festivities.

Dorr will celebrate for three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Hopkins essentially will have its holiday festival on Saturday. Green Lake’s will be Friday and Saturday.

Dorr plans 3-day celebration

A community flea markeimagest at 8:30 a.m. outside Dorr Township Hall will begin the weekend festivities. There will be country music concert with the band Stolen Horses at 7 p.m, followed at 10:30 p.m. with a “Light Up the Sky” Chinese sky lantern launch.

Dorr 4th of July Committee member Rick Dutkiewicz said the balloon launch had to be scrapped, but bingo at noon Saturday was added.

The Saturday, July 4, schedule in Dorr:

  • 7 to 10 a.m. — Community breakfast, Dorr Christian Reformed Church.
  • 9 a.m. — Lineup for Fourth of July parade at Dorr Legion Hall on 18th Street. The parade will step off at 10:30 and viewing areas will be from 18th Street and 142nd Avenue west to North and South parks.

All activities after the parade are at South Park, where no alcohol, dogs or bikes will be allowed.

• Noon — Ox roast and Knights of Columbus chicken barbecue. Bingo.

  • Noon to 1:30 p.m. — KaR Tunes, folk and rock music classics.
  • 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. — Karaoke.
  • 6 p.m. — Dick’s Market bratwurst, concert with Pushing Humanity, music in the tradition of Grateful Dead and Phish.
  • 7:30 p.m. — Concert with the band Tricks, classic rock.
  • 10:15 p.m. — Fireworks (bring lawn chairs/blankets).

Sunday, July 5

  • 10:30 a.m. — Outdoor worship service at South Park by Crosswind Community Church.
  • Noon at South Park — Classic Car and Truck Show, Beanbag Toss Tournament, and the Clash of the Slices pizza contest.

A tractor pull also will get under way at Foxfire Pullers, 2245 144th Ave.

Proceeds will be used for Dorr youth sports programs and events in the Dorr community.

Hopkins, Saturday, July 4, downtown

  • 8 to 10 a.m. — Free breakfast at the fire barn.
  • 9 to 10:30 a.m. — Old-fashioned hymn sing.
  • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Craft sale at the township hall.
  • 11 a.m. to noon — Zumba dance.
  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Scavenger hunt.
  • Noon to 3:30 p.m. — Family and carnival games, Iron Man games, “Redneck” games.
  • Throughout the day — Petting zoo, cowpie bingo, antique tractor display, old-time jail, wheelbarrow races, log toss and husband hollerin’.
  • 4 p.m. — Children’s parade, with lineup at 3:45 at the fire barn. It is open to all children with wagons and pedal-power vehicles only.
  • 5 p.m — Main parade, with lineup at the high school at 4 p.m. It is open to new and antique tractors, hot rods, street cars, big rigs, horses and hitches, floats, and groups. All routes leading into Hopkins will be closed from 5 to 6 p.m. during the main parade.
  • 6 p.m. — Prince and princess pageant will begin on the main stage, followed at 7 p.m. by the queen’s pageant.
  • 6:30 p.m. — Duck races.

Fireworks will start at dusk. Seating is at the school campus on the soccer field.

The Hopkins District Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as a cooling station only. Visitors will be invited to write a letter to a U.S. military service member.

Green Lake Friday and Saturday

Green Lake will have its annual boat parade at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 3. Fireworks will be shot off at dusk over Green Lake in the northwest corner.

A community-wide pancake breakfast will be from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Green Lake Fire Department building. Cost is $3 for adults and $1 for kids under 12. Extra donations will be encouraged to help pay for fireworks.

Guests also are asked to bring canned food to be donated to Project Hope in Dorr.

The Land Parade will start at noon Saturday. Lineup will be at 11:30 a.m. in the west parking lot of Green Lake Calvary Church, 608 145th Ave. The parade will proceed east down 145th Avenue (Kalamazoo) to South Shore Drive, then to Round Lake Drive, and back to Kalamazoo Avenue, ending at the Fire Department.

There is no charge to participate in the parade. Prizes will be given to all children fifth grade and younger who ride their bike or participate in the parade.

Immediately after the parade, there will be an open house at the Green Lake Fire Department facility put on by the Leighton Township Fire Department. There will be fire truck hose spraying, other demonstrations and treats.

Gun Lake Fireworks

The annual fireworks display over Gun Lake is scheduled to start at about 10:20 p.m. Saturday, July 4.
