County Covid deaths jump to 118, but signs positive

The number of Coronavirus cases reported in Allegan County continues to decline, but the death toll in the last week increased from 110 to 118.

The average number of cases over a two-week period declined to blow 10 over the last three days and the positivity rate is down to 5.1 percent. Statewide, the positivity rate for testing is just over 3%.

Total number of cases in the county as of Monday afternoon was 7,235, with 179 hospitalizations. A total of 6,728 people have been reported to have recovered.

Though Michigan deaths climbed to more than 15,000 recently, most statistics show slowing of the spread of Covid-19. Wayland Union Schools, as a result, have completed three days of in-person classroom learning and it intends to continue that learning model. Hopkins will go to four days a week in-person on March 8.

Martin schools have stuck with every day in-person instruction since the academic year started in August, except for a high school lockdown from mid-November to the first week in January

Michigan has done better than most of the nation since the holiday break. Restaurants have opened at 25 percent capacity Feb. 1, and high school sports have begun competitions.

The Health Department put together its first of a series of vaccination clinics at the Wayland High School gym earlier this month, providing shots to about 1,000 people. Clinics are planned at the high school auxiliary gym every Saturday throughout February and second vaccinations are planned to begin on the first week of March.

Those who live or work in Allegan County and are interested in receiving the COVID-19 vaccine should sign up through the “I Want the COVID-19 Vaccine” form on www.allegancounty.org/covid. Once they are signed up, they will receive an e-mail from ACHD about when they can schedule an appointment.

An ACHD spokesperson said, “Due to the overwhelming response and limited vaccine availability, eligible individuals may not receive an email for three to four weeks. If individuals need confirmation that they are on the registry, please e-mail covidvaccine@allegancounty.org
