Lady Wildcats now 5-2 after Gull Lake Invitational

The Wayland girls’ varsity softball team now owns a 5-2 overall record after going 2-for-3 in the Gull Lake Invitational Saturday.

The Lady Wildcats opened the day with a 7-1 defeat at the hands of Division 1 state ranked Anchor Bay. Emma Tornes had the Wildcats’ only hit.

However, they bounced back to defeat Byron Center 7-1 and St. Joseph 6-5. They had split a twin bill with Byron Center in their season opener last week.

Junior Emma Ludema took the victory on the mound against St. Joe. Leading the Wildcats offensively were Kaelyn Sikkema and Kylie Mutschler with two singles apiece. Grace Kincaid had a single, Emma Tornes had a double, Kayla Reed had a triple and Kennedy Cole had a home run.

Kayla Reed took the victory on the mound vs. Byron Center. Kami Morse had a single and a double, Emma Tornes and Emma Ludema both drilled a couple of singles, Grace Kincaid had a triple, and Kaelyn Sikkema and Kylie Mutschler added a single apiece.

Wayland was scheduled to pay Cedar Springs Tuesday in a doubleheader, but the games have been canceled. The Lady Wildcats will play Hopkins in a single non-league game Wednesday.
