Plan Commission gives OK to housing, storage plans

The Wayland City Planning Commission Tuesday evening recommended rezoning for a proposed residential development on 133rd Avenue and approved a site plan for a second storage unit business on Reno Drive.

The commission held a public hearing on rezoning two parcels along 133rd from agricultural to residential, from R-A to R-1. This removes an obstacle for a housing development.

Zoning Administrator Lori Castello noted, however, that the project needs approval from the Allegan County Drain Commission, Health Department and Road Commission. The Plan Commission last month approved preliminary plat review and the City Council concurred May 3.

“The plan meets the goals of the master plan of the city,” explained Castello of Professional Code Inspections. “Their next step will be getting outside agency approvals.”

The rezoning next will go before the City Council at its May 17 meeting.

The commission also approved the site plan for a new self-storage business by Karl Veldheer, owner of Superior Self-Storage. The new facility, if approved, would be across the street on Reno Drive, between Harding’s Market and General RV, using the service road at that location.

The site plan also will go before City Council May 17.

In other business at Tuesday’s meeting, the commission:

  • Was told by City Manager Josh Eggleston that he would like to have representatives of city government join a school bus tour of marijuana facilities in West Michigan to gather information in anticipation of requests for starting up such a business in Wayland. He proposed either June 5 or June 19.
  • Learned about the serious possibility City Council and Planning Commission meetings in June and July will be held at the Wayland High School Fine Arts Center. Eggleston said the current council chambers are likely to be inadequate in meeting requirements as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wayland Union schools have granted use of a bus for the marijuana facility tour and use of the FAC for meetings later this summer.
