Martin vs. Mendon Friday is ‘only showdown in town’

The “only showdown in town” for this area this season will be played Friday evening at Martin when a once-beaten Mendon squad pays a visit.

The host Clippers, who also will honor three inductees into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame at halftime, have won their first six games this season and scored 290 points to their opponents’ 18. They have mowed down Tri-Unity Christian, Fennville, Gobles, Montabella, Bloomingdale and Eau Claire, the last by forfeit.

The visiting Hornets haven’t been too shabby, either. They have clobbered Vandercook Lake, Bloomingdale. Fennville, Montabella and Marcellus en route to a 5-1 record. Their only loss was a stunning 45-0 defeat at the hands of Bridgman.

Clearly at stake will be the Southwest Athletic Conference championship, but it remains highly likely both teams will be included in the post-season playoffs. Martin in the last two season has lost in the semifinals to the eventual state champions, its only two losses on the gridiron since switching to eight-man football in 2019.

Kickoff at the Clippers’ lair will be at 7 p.m.
