Kalamazoo Hackett ends Martin girls’ win streak

Kalamazoo Hackett Friday night halted the Martin girls’ basketball winning streak at five games by posting a 39-35 verdict.

The Lady Clippers trailed 18-15 at halftime.

The loss dropped Martin’s overall season record to 5-2. The Irish also are 5-2 on for the season overall.

Coach Ben Schipper said, “Tough start for us tonight, having Gracie Shettler roll her ankle in the first quarter. She ended up giving it a go in the second half, but definitely wasn’t able to be herself.

“Despite Gracie going down, we put up a fight without her, still being in the game at the end. Turnovers killed us tonight. We were way too careless with the ball, which has become quite a problem for us over the last few games. We handled their full court pressure OK, but just made bad decisions and sloppy passes.”

Lynsey Jager was a bright spot for Martin, leading the team with 9 points and pulling down numerous rebounds.

“She also played solid defense,” Schipper said.

Cirsten Coburn and Makala Goddard both added eight points.
