Hopkins’ bats are booming in 13-3 sweeps of Plainwell

Peyton Roxbury had six hits on the day.

The Hopkins softball team’s offensive prowess was reawakened Monday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Plainwell by identical 13-3 scores.

The pair of victories lifted the Vikings’ overall season record to 6-1. Townbroadcast erroneously said they lost 7-6 to Parchment, but that was a scrimmage because umpires didn’t show.

Hopkins collected 14 hits in the nightcap, with leadoff hitter Peyton Roxbury going 4-for-4 with a couple of runs batted in. Sierra Smith added three hits and Emily Dimock two.

Smith drilled a couple of doubles and Dimock, Hannah Brinks and Aubrey Russell added one apiece. Brinks, Avery Osborn and Lyla Reynolds each collected three RBis.

Brinks, only a freshman, registered the victory on the mound, going five innings, yielding five hits, walking two and striking out four.

The Vikings again came up with 14 hits in the afternoon opener. Dimock, who had three hits, and Osborn both clubbed a double, but Smith cracked a home run and drove in three tallies. Smith, Osborn and Roxbury both drilled a couple of hits.

Smith hurled six innings to pick up the pitching victory, giving up five hits, no earned runs and striking out three.

Coach Amy Funk’s crew will be at Grand Rapids Covenant Christian Wednesday for another twin bill.
