Hopkins finishes regular season with 21-9 record

Lyla Reynolds was back at being an offensive tear again Thursday.

The Hopkins varsity softball team completed its regular season Thursday afternoon by splitting a non-league doubleheader against Parchment, both with identical 10-6 final scores.

The results left the Vikings with a 21-9 overall season record, identical to its 21-9 mark in 2019, and they finished second to Division 3 powerhouse Calvin Christian in the final O-K Silver Conference standings.

Hopkins will play Hastings at noon Saturday in one of two district semifinal contests at its home field. A victory over the Saxons likely would mean a date with a 34-1 Wayland team in the championship round.

Sierra Smith boomed a couple of doubles and Megan Andres, Hannah Brinks, Lyla Reynolds and Madison Schwartz each added one two-bagger. Reynolds also hammered a triple.

Smith and Peyton Roxbury both delivered three hits and Brinks and Reynolds had two apiece.

Brinks, only a freshman, went the distance on the mound, walking two and striking out six.

But it was reversal of fortune in the nightcap.

Smith, who absorbed the loss on the mound, had two hits for the Vikings, as did Roxbury, Reynolds and Schwartz. Reynolds drove in couple of runs with two doubles.

Smith suffered from a lack of fielding support with five Hopkins errors and none of Parchment’s runs were earned.
