Name of motorist killed in Salem Township identified

An Allegan County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a motorist Thursday night at around 10 p.m. during a traffic stop in Salem Township.

Michigan State Police reported in a news release that the shooting occurred on 26th Street near 136th Avenue after the driver was pulled over and there was some type of physical altercation. The deputy fired at least one shot.

Joseph Maverick Nagle, 22, of Comstock Park, was identified as the man fatally shot by a deputy about 10 miles west of Wayland The deputy, who sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, is on administrative leave during the investigation by State Police.

There was no gun belonging to Nagle found at the scene and a body cam was not operating at the time of the incident.

“This investigation is in its infancy stage, which means we do not have a lot of information to share right now,” a spokesperson said for MSP. “Interviewing witnesses, gathering facts and collecting evidence takes time. We ask everyone to please extend our detectives some grace and patience to be able to complete a professional and thorough investigation.”
