Hopkins guys keep Allegan basketball team winless, 58-22

The Hopkins boys’ bJacob Beck (23)asketball team liMichael Kane (4) breakfted its overall season record to 6-7 Tuesday evening with a resounding 58-22 victory over visiting Allegan in a nonleague contest.

Allegan has been known for a long time as a top-notch wrestling school and Tuesday’s game proved it. The Tigers, now 0-12 for the season, came out strong in the first three minutes, taking a 6-2 advantage, but Hopkins’ full-court pressure led to five consecutive turnovers.

The Vikings then went on a 12-0 run for the last five minutes of the period and grabbed a 14-6 cushion. Allegan failed to score a basket in the entire second quarter, making three free throw sand the home team was on top 29-9 at intermission. The Tigers did not score a single point for almost 11 minutes during the first half and added only three points in the third period.

It was Hopkins’ sixth triumph in its last eight games. Coach Darrin Smith’s Vikings got off to an awful start at 0-5 and since then have lost only to state-ranked Wyoming Godwin Heights and the only team to beat the Wolverines, NorthPointe Christian.

Senior guard-forward Ryan Pierce scored 11 points to lead Hopkins despite battling early foul troubles. Braden Ellis scored eight points to lead Allegan.
