‘Cats win 49-35 shootout; Vikings struggle thus far

The Wayland High School varsity football team improved its overall season record to 2-0 Friday evening with a 49-35 victory in a shootout against visiting Holland Christian.

Wayland defeated Hopkins and Holland Christian last year in its first two games and finished with a 4-5 overall record. But this year the local lads have scored 89 points in their first two games.

The Wildcats, however, will have their work cut out for them next Friday, Sept. 8, when they open O-K Gold Conference action against perennial powerhouse Grand Rapids Catholic Central.

The Hopkins varsity football team, meanwhile, is off to a rocky start to the 2023 season.

The Vikings lost at Allendale Friday night, 36-0, in a non-league encounter. They fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter and trailed 29-0 at halftime.

Hopkins has scored only seven points in its first two games, a touchdown and extra point against Wayland in the fourth quarter of a 40-7 defeat on Aug. 25.

It may be early in the season, but the Vikings could be in danger of failing to make the post-season playoffs for the first time in six years, since 2017.

It doesn’t get any better next Friday when they begin O-K Silver Conference play against the pre-season league favorite, Belding.
