City of Wayland selects PCI for planning consultant

Kirk Scharp2The Wayland City Council was unanimous in selecting Professional Code Inspections (PCI) of Dorr Monday as new planning consultant.

Kirk Scharphorn Jr. will be the planner working with the city and at Planning Commission meetings.

“We’re excited to add planning to the variety of services provided to the City of Wayland by PCI,” said City Manager Tim McLean. “I view this as a great fit for the city.”

Williams & Works of Grand Rapids of Grand Rapids also was interviewed by a committee last Thursday.

“We were very impressed with them as well,” McLean said. “Going into the interviews, I felt very strongly that ours was going to be a happy choice in that either firm could work very well with the city.”

PCI has been serving as interim planner since the city broke ties with Wade Trim early this year because Planning Consultant Janice Johnson left that firm to reboot Main Street Planners of Grand Rapids with her husband, Tim.

Main Street was one of the three bidders for planning services, McLean confirmed.

The Wayland City Planning Commission discussed the development briefly last month. Some members were curious about PCI, which is much better known in these parts for building inspections and zoning enforcement.

Kirk Scharphorn Jr., son of the co-founder of PCI, said the firm is ready, willing and able to handle all planning duties.

“We tailor our program to what you guys want,” Scharphorn said.
