The second public meeting on a proposed air strip near the corner of Kalamazoo Avenue and 144th Avenue has been scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at the Leighton Township Hall, 4451 12th St.

The first meeting on the issue was held July 10, after which Township Board members said they needed more time to absorb the information before making a decision about whether to approve the proposal.

Galloway Landings proposes to develop a 2,000-foot airstrip for use by five planes, with four residences. The plans have been scaled down a great deal since first proposed more than a year ago. Township Supervisor Steve Deer is a partner in the project and he has recused himself from discussions or voting.

Those who support the air strip maintain it would be an economic asset to the community. Those opposed insist it would cause noise and safety problems.

The Leighton Township Planning Commission, at its April 12 meeting, voted to recommend against the development.
