Vikings go 1-1-1 for 2nd time in softball tourney

Sophomore catcher Lyla Reynolds had a triple and a home run in the loss to Zeelan East.

The Hopkins softball team went 1-1-1 in a tournament Saturday Coopersville for the second time this spring.

The Lady Vikings defeated Kenowa Hills 17-6 in their third game of the day, lost 8-3 to Zeeland East and started the day with a 2-2 tie vs. a Cedar Springs outfit that is in second place behind perennial powerhouse Wayland in the O-K Gold Conference standings.

Two huge rallies carried Hopkins in its victory, a six-run burst in the third inning and seven runs in the fourth.

Lyla Reynolds, Jessica Spray and Peyton Roxbury collected three hits apiece in the contest and Cami Hibma and Hannah Brinks added two each. Spray and Madison Schwartz both drove home three runs and Reynolds and Roxbury both had two RBIs. The Vikings had 15 hits.

Dahlia Veldhouse picked up the win on the mound and Brinks pitched scoreless relief for a little more than an inning. Veldhouse didn’t walk anybody and struck out three.

The game was shortened to five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Zeeland East scored in every inning but the fifth to pin a loss on Hopkins. The Chix banged out 11 hits against starter Hannah Brinks and reliever Dahlia Veldhouse. The latter gave up only one run on two hits in two innings of work.

Lyla Reynolds crashed a homer, a triple and a single, but the Vikings managed only seven hits.

Hopkins took a 2-0 lead in the first three innings, but Cedar Springs found the plate twice in the fourth.

The Red Hawks entered the ballgame with an overall record of 20-8, but Veldhouse scattered nine hits and allowed only two runs in her seven innings on the mound, walking one and striking out three.

Offensively, Avery Osborn and Ava Vanderkolk both had a pair of singles, but no Viking had an extra base hit.

Hopkins now owns an overall record of 15-11-2 and is 8-2 in second place the O-K Silver Conference.
