
The Wayland boys’ varsity bowling team Monday afternoon lost 20-10 to 2024 state runner-up Grand Rapids Northview at the local Rock ’N Bowl Lanes.
Meanwhile, It was an easy day for the local ladies against Northview, winning 27-3.
The Wildcat boys came out on fire in the first Baker game, setting a school record with a game of 268, eclipsing Northview’s 139.
”We didn’t fare as well in the second Baker, as we had some open frames and that cost us,” said coach Sherry Miklusicak. “We found ourselves up 6 to 4 which is a very good spot to be in against a very good team.”
Dominic Baker went 4 for 4 in the Baker games. Jayse went 3 for 4, Louis Harness went 4 for 4 and anchor Kyle VanEss went 5 for 5.
“We bowled very, very well in match one with all of our guys rolling 180 or above,” Miklusicak said. “A team score of 916 is very good, but unfortunately we lost by 64 pins.” Dominic Baker took his point with a 189, Wil Dewing had a fine 183 game. Jayse Henkel took his point with a 181. Louis Harnish had a fine 180 game and Kyle VanEss rolled a 183.
“Things got really exciting and game two we were up by quite a few pins midway through the game,” the coach continuede. “Northview made a bowling change and that got their team fired up. We were still in it until like the ninth frame and they just completely struck out. We ended up losing total pins in this match 58 pins.”
This game Dominik Baker took his point again with a 193 game. It was close – down to the 10th frame and he was nerves of steel and held on for the win. Kyle VanEss rolled to 207 and won his point easily.
“Northview was better than us, was not with the amount of strikes they had, but with their amazing spare shooting,’ Miklusicak pointed out. “That is where we need to work a little harder… The final score didn’t really show how close the match really was.
“As a coach, I have a lot of respect for our boys. They are a very, very good team and they always conduct themselves in such a way that I am always makes me proud. A lot can be said for how they are raised.”
The Lady Wildcats won both Baker games with scores of 128-119 and 115-108 to take a quick and commanding 10-0 lead.
In the first match, Brooke Trumbull took her point with a 149 game, Jasmine Ortiz tore it up with a 198 game, and Haven Baker had a great 185 game. The ladies beat Northview by just 18 total pins that game. After this first match game, the Wayland ladies had already won.
In match game two, Ava Harnish took her point with a 114, Madison Bottrall took her point with a 140, Brooke Trumbull again took a point with a 179, and Haven Baker took the last match point with a 186.
Total pins was not even close as Wayland won by nearly 200 pins.
