Wildcats move to 20-8 after 2 victories at Centreville

Kami Morse homered three times.

The Wayland softball team added two victories Saturday at the Centreville Invitational to bring its season total to 20.

It’s been rare for any team coached by Cheri Ritz has accumulated fewer than 20 victories in a season. These results brought the Wildcats’ record to 20-8.

Both games were lopsided, as Wayland’s offense erupted again and freshman Madi Ludema and sophomore Harmony Laker picked up victories on the mound.

Laker tossed five innings of shutout ball, limiting host Centreville to just three hits, walking none and striking out six in an 11-0 verdict. Ludema had to work only three innings in a 20-4 rout of Sturgis in the opener.

Kami Morse had yet another big day offensively, as she clouted two home runs and Laker, Reese Veltman and Ludema each added a double to the 15-hit attack. The Wildcats broke the game wide open in the second inning with an eight-run rally.

Morse and Liberty Laker both collected three hits and Veltman, Carli Miklusicak and Harmony Laker had two apiece.

Wayland plated eight runs against Sturgis in the first innin, adding three in the second and nine more in the third and final frame, shortened by the 15-run mercy rule.

Both Liberty and Harmony Laker went 4-for-4, Morse, Miklusicak and Ludema all had three hits apiece and Rae Stallard and Izzy Johnson both had a couple of singles.

Morse and Ludema both cracked a homer, Miklusicak unloaded three doubles, Liberty had two and Harmony, Veltman and Ludema contributed one two-bagger apiece as the ‘Cats pounded out a remarkable 23 hits.

Wayland, besides its 20-8 overall mark, is undefeated in its eight O-K Gold Conference contests this spring.
