ACHTUNG: This is not a “fair and balanced” article. It is an editorial by the editor.
It appears Allegan County voters will have a rare opportunity to choose between two candidates who have differing opinions in the Republican primary next August.
Because of redistricting, the process of changing government districts every 10 years to reflect population changes, we will see the names of two incumbent GOP Congressmen, Bill Huizenga and Fred Upton on the ballot for the new Fourth District.
For once, we’ll actually have a choice above and beyond the customary issues over which one is more Pro-Life, which one loves our country more, which one is more pro-gun. In our race to the bottom, we’ve had to put up with candidates who seem to have been churned out of a factory on a conveyor belt.
All of ‘em believe pretty much the same about “God Guns, Guts, Gays and Abortion,” the staple of culture wars subjects that has enabled the unwashed masses to vote for Republicans, even though they have stiffed working people for more than 40 years.
Yes, since the Reagan Revolution, the GOP has deteriorated into a sickening practice of marching in lockstep with their fearless leader, most recently Donald Trump. Besides the five issues I mentioned before, they all stand against federal government overreach and for advancing state’s rights, particularly in matters involving the Coronavirus crisis.
Huizenga, in particular, ignores the historical fact that state’s rights was the chief reason given by the South when it seceded from the union in 1860. Make that state’s rights to own slaves, later to become the best way to protect segregation and ways to keep people of color from voting.
But there is one really huge gap between Upton and Huizenga.
Upton, who has served in Congress since 1987, was one of the 10 Republican members of Congress who voted a year ago to impeach then-President Donald Trump because of his apparent incitement of the seditionists who violently invaded the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6, 2021, and tried to stop the counting of ballots that certified Joe Biden’s election.
Since the aftermath of the failed coup d’etat, Upton has stood for the rule of law and peaceful transition of power after a presidential election. Huizenga, meanwhile, has opposed even the creation of a committee to investigate the shameful incident. He has consistently hemmed and hawed and provided lame excuses for his president’s traitorous behavior.
So, think, Allegan County GOP voters. Are we a government of laws, or a government of men? Huizenga apparently chooses the latter, making him nothing better than a psychophant, a toady of Der Fuhrer.
Asking current GOP voters to think is really asking a lot, David. Most just watch TV for instructions from Fox and their Mar-a-Lago messiah.
I was very happy to see the redistricting in our area. Finally we will have a excellent chance of getting rid of RINO Freddy. Please look at his voting record over his entire career, nothing more than a moderate democRAT. Time for him to go. I am guessing ( I don’t have a credible source) he will quietly “retire” to avoid the embarrassment he would likely face in the primary.
Cheers!!
Bill Huizenga, Betsy DeVos acolyte and the science denying supporter of domestic terrorists who attempted to nullify the 2020 presidential election, will be popular among those who claim to love small government.
But when the federal government is handing out money to farmers and small business (which includes businesses of fewer than 500 people), the Allegan County Republicans are lining up at the trough, just like the Democrats they regularly demonize as takers.
And so it goes.
PS
I will be voting for Fred Upton, one of the few members of the GOP House who stood up for the Constitution rather than quake in fear, then subsequently tacitly agree with Donald Trump’s lies about a stolen election.
A vote for Bill Huizenga is a vote for despotism.
2030,
You are voting for a Republican (RINO)……..Or is this just your way of letting us know how you feel about former President Donald Trump…..and Betsy as well…..They are gone, get over it already……..
Cheers!!
Trump and Betsy are gone lets keep it that way. RINO ( really informed no obsession) with big lies or loyalty to the King.
well said Couchman
Neither are true conservatives, but what the hell…they are not Demoncats.
Upton is a perfect example of why we need term limits in Washington. I say this for both sides of the aisle.
Term limits for Federal elected officials get what we see in MI since term limits were implemented.
Each party’s long time aides are assigned to rookies who do what they are told by party donors (See Steve Johnson), propose legislation that’s written for them by special interests (See former state rep Bob Genetski who co-sponsored pattern legislation spoon fed to him by American Legislative Exchange Council).
Then when term limited out they rotate to county elective jobs with no term limits like Genetski, Lisa Posthumus Lyons and others.
Don’t like Fred Upton? Then get a viable candidate to run against him in a primary.
