A representative from GVL Excavating presents a sketch of the project.

The Leighton Township Board Thursday evening voted 4-0 to approve a request for ordinance text amendment for GVL Excavating.

The action will allow the sand and gravel mining company at 4750 Division to add about six more acres and two lots to its 40-acre, 14-lot site for operations.

In other business at Thursday night’s meeting, the Township Board:

  • Tentatively scheduled a special public hearing for 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, on Clark Galloway’s latest project plans for the Galloway Landings Air Park. The Planning Commission already has recommended extension of the runway by 665 feet. Board members will make every effort to avoid any conflicts with early voters. The tentative action also was necessary because Trustee Brian Bonnema was absent Thursday and board members haven’t heard yet from the applicant.
  • Tabled once again a proposal from Allegan County to place a groundwater monitoring well near the fire station near Green Lake. Fennema said she is opposed “if there is any expense (to the township) and we don’t get to use the water.”
  • Learned from Leighton Township Library representative Faith Miedema that the local library last month handled a whopping 9,256 items and there are 432 children and more than 100 adults signed upon for summer programs.
  • Was told by Fire Chief Matt Weston that the department has worked hard to bring down the average response time to six and a half minutes.
