The Wayland City Council Monday evening agreed to closing a small portion of the alleyway behind McDuff’s Restaurant , 105 E. Superior St., on Sunday, Sept. 17, for a downtown special event.
McDuff’s did not disclose what the event will be, but it also plans to use the city’s mini-park to the immediate west at the downtown four corners.
In other business Monday night, the council:
- Agreed to pay $39,692.98 to Steensma Equipment of Plainwell to buy a backup generator. Fire Chief Jon Timmers said the old unit has been operating since 1978, so it’s time for replacement.
- Fielded a complaint from Chris Taylor that the disfigured tree near her property still hasn’t been disposed of. City Manager Erik Wilson said he would relay the information to the Department of Public Works.
- Approved modification of the by-laws to include the starting time for a Committee of the Whole meeting from 6 to 6:30 p. m. on the third Monday of each month.
- Listened to comments by Mayor Jennifer Antel that she appreciates the laying of fiber optics around town for technology upgrades.
- Took no action on choosing a new member of the Planning Commission to succeed new Councilwoman Megan Mickelson. There are two finalists for the seat, but neither the council nor the commission have decided on who wins the seat. Wilson sent the Planning Commission the two names, but members declined to make a recommendation.
