All 3 local grid teams open season in style

“It looks like deja vu all over again.” — The late, great Yogi Berra

Martin coach Brad Blauvelt offers congratulatory words to his team members, especially for their defensive work in the second half, shutting down Bridgman entirely.

It was indeed deja vu for the Wayland and Hopkins varsity football teams in their season openers on the road Thursday night. The only real difference was the location of the venue.

Wayland opened its campaign with a 50-27 victory at Lansing Waverly. The ‘Cats downed the Warriors 49-14 a year ago at Ron Stehouwer Stadium.

Meanwhile, Hopkins did a similar number on host Fremont, taking a 29-14 triumph after scoring a 34-20 victory in August 2024.

It wasn’t quite deja vu for Martin Friday night. The Clippers were on their home field, where they shot out to a 38-20 advantage at the half and then finished the job by shutting down the Bees’ offense entirely, taking a 58-20 victory.

Martin did not play Bridgman last year in the season opener.
