Two Wildcat boys go 1-2 in Wayland Invitational

Mason Fein and Ethan Manning

Sophomore harrier Abree VanDenBrink and her Wayland teammates checked in second Tuesday in the Wayland Invitational cross-country meet. Mason Fein was individual medalist and Wildcat boys were runners-up to Grand Rapids Union.

While Hamilton girls won the girls’ race with 31 points, the Lady Wildcats were only four points back. Hastings finished with 62  and Wyoming Lee 108.

VanDenBrink’s runner-up time was 20:34 behind Hastings’ Caroline Randall’s blistering clocking of 19:29.69. It didn’t hurt Wayland’s chances when freshman Madison Bumhoffer finished third in 21:06.51.

But four Hawkeyes swept fourth through eighth places.

Senior Ryleigh Haveman took eighth place, Marissa Ainsworth was 10th and Sophia Miller 12th.

Fein and senior teammate Ethan Manning went 1-2 for Wayland in the guys’ race with times of 17:43 and 17:56.64, respectively. Alberto Manujando finished eighth in 19:36.66.

But the Wildcats just couldn’t match GR Union’s depth.

Freshman Carter Bultje was 23rd and Shane Krasinski 35th to round out the scoring.

So Union’s collective score was 40, Wayland’s was 66, followed by Wyoming. Hastings, Hamilton and Wyoming Lee.

Next on the Wildcats’ schedule is the O-K Gold Conference meet hosted by West Catholic on Wednesday, Oct. 15.
