Kaleigh Shuster will be guest speaker at the scholastic honors program Tuesday.
Wayland High School students will be recognized for their academic achievements at the annual Scholastic Honors Night/Alumni Hall of Fame induction ceremony at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, at the Wayland Union Fine Arts Center.
Wayland High School students in grades 9-12 who have earned a grade point average of 3.5 or higher will be recognized for their achievements.
Featured guest speaker will be Kaleigh Shuster, a 2009 graduate of Wayland Union High School. During her time here she participated in Peer Assisted Leadership (PALS), was a member of the Wayland chapter of the National Honor Society, played in the orchestra, and was a standout athlete on Wayland’s volleyball, basketball and soccer teams.
After graduation, Shuster received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Hillsdale College, where she was also a member of the Division II women’s college volleyball team. Her professional career brought her back to her alma mater, where she has taught third and fourth grades at Dorr Elementary School.
She serves as a curriculum resource author for Teachers Pay Teachers and volunteers for multiple groups and organizations
The ceremony also will induct two new members into the Wayland Union Schools Alumni Hall of Fame – Beatrice (Rairigh) Smith and Dick Miller. Bea Smith will be inducted posthumously with Kathy (Lough) Matthews, her daughter, accepting the award on her behalf
Both Bea Smith and Dick Miller are former staff and faculty at Wayland Union High School.
Miller, a 1962 graduate, also played football, basketball and tennis and was a coach in football and basketball in the 1960s and ’70s.
The Alumni Hall of Fame award began in 2001 and receives nominations from the public. Individuals must have made an important contribution to Wayland Union Schools, the WUS community, or to society in general.
