Reese Coughlin

The Wayland girls’ varsity basketball team had to grind it out Tuesday night to take a 43-37 decision from O-K Gold Conference opponent Kenowa Hills.

The boys’ squad did not fare as well on the road, losing to the Knights 68-49, dropping their overall record to 2-17.

The victory lifted the Lady Wildcats’ league record to 8-2 and they remain tied for second place with Cedar Springs.

Junior Harmony Laker again led the offensive attack with 12 points. Freshman Marissa Ainsworth contributed nine points, sophomore Addy Sikorsky had eight and senior Reese Coughlin seven. Laker and Ainsworth both nailed a couple of threes and Coughlin and Izzy John both had one.

Wayland now owns an overall record of 12-6 and has won its last five games in a row. Next up the annual “Coaches vs. Cancer” contest at home Friday evening against Middleville Thornapple Kellogg.
