Abductor of Hopkins girl given 11-year prison term

Charles Morancey, 45, of Rhode Island has been sentenced to 11 years and two months in prison followed by 20 years of supervised release after pleading guilty to luring a 15-year-old Hopkins girl from her home and sexually assaulting her.

Morancey pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court November 2019 to travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct and receipt of child pornography after befriending the teen on the Internet in July 2019. He was accused of helping her run away from home Aug. 2, 2019, and drove her to Rhode Island.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office indicated that Morancey engaged in sexual activity with her several times in Rhode Island.

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Department tracked down the Hopkins girl using an emergency search warrant on her Instagram account and police in Rhode Island were able to arrest him.
