All 3 girls’ hoops teams in action Wednesday in semis

All three of this area’s girls’ basketball teams will play Wednesday evening in the semifinal round of the Division 2 districts at South Christian’s athletic complex.

Wayland, with its 13-7 record, will take on Holland Christian at 7 p.m. Holland Christian put together an 11-1 record to win the O-K Black Conference title, but the Maroons’ overall mark for the regular season was 15-7. They lost 51-44 to Wayland on Dec. 19.

Hopkins, which has been on a 15-1 tear since Jan. 6—and that one loss was in overtime—will play a South Haven team that is somewhat of a mystery. The Rams will bring a 13-9 overall record to the Hamilton gym at 7 p.m. while the Lady Vikings are 18-4 in perhaps its best season in a long time.

Martin will bring a 10-10 overall record to the Lawrence gym at 7 p.m.to take on the same Battle Creek St. Philip squad to whom it lost Thursday night 55-47. The Lady Clippers made it close until the final stretch in the fourth period. St Philip is 13-8.

If Wayland and Hopkins survive the district semifinal match, both will have the unenviable task of taking on strong opponents, the No. 1 seeds in South Christian (22-0) and Otsego (19-1), respectively. The finals in all three districts will be held at 7 p.m. Friday.
