Allegan County Circuit Court Chief Justice Roberts Kengis has announced he is retiring after serving on the bench for five years.
Kengis first served as an assistant prosecutor in 1992 and won election to the county prosecutor’s post in the 2016 general election. Two years later he was appointed to the 48th Circuit Court judgeship by then-Gov. Rick Snyder, succeeding Kevin Cronin, who resigned.
He won election to the judgeship in 2020 and then became chief judge in 2022.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will appoint Kengis’ successor no later than June 30. The appointee will be eligible to retain the seat in the general election of November 2024.
Kengis and Marge Bakker have served as circuit judges for Allegan County over the past five years, but the county next year will add another judgeship and Probate Judge Michael Buck is stepping down, so three judges will be elected in 2024.
