The Allegan County Health Department has reported four more deaths for the second straight week as a result of the Coronavirus, bringing the total to 188 since the pandemic began in March 2020.

As of Friday, Aug. 27, the death toll was listed at 160, and the county’s number since the start of the pandemic had remained at 158 for about two months over the summer. So the toll for just the last two months is 28.

The testing positivity rate for the disease is now 17.9 percent, up 1.6 percentage points in the past week, and more than 5 percent over the past two weeks. There have been 14 new hospitalizations over the past two weeks and the average daily number of cases has increased to 93.6, up from 52.6 over seven days.

A total of 780 cases has been reported in the county over the past two weeks, again a slight increase. There now have been 331 hospitalizations from Covid in Allegan County since the pandemic began, a slight increase over the course of the month. The number of tests is 21,758, more than 1,500 more than a week ago and 12,889 people have been characterized as recovered.

Wayland High School reported four cases of Covid-19 this week and there has been an outbreak of cases at St. Therese Church.

The Allegan County Health Department Aug. 18 issued a directive for all public schools in the county to mandate children in grades K-6 to wear masks in the classrooms because they are not eligible for vaccinations. In the wake of protests from parents and the State Legislature’s threat of withholding funding, the Health Department rescinded its mask order Oct. 1.

Governments can err, Presidents do make mistakes, but the immortal Dante tells us that divine justice weighs the sins of the cold-blooded and the sins of the warm-hearted in different scales. Better the occasional faults of a Government that lives in a spirit of charity than the consistent omissions of a Government frozen in the ice of its own indifference. There is a mysterious cycle in human events. To some generations much is given. Of other generations much is expected. This generation of Americans has a rendezvous with destiny. In this world of ours in other lands, there are some people, who, in times past, have lived and fought for freedom, and seem to have grown too weary to carry on the fight. They have sold their heritage of freedom for the illusion of a living. They have yielded their democracy. I believe in my heart that only our success can stir their ancient hope. They begin to know that here in America we are waging a great and successful war. It is not alone a war against want and destitution and economic demoralization. It is more than that; it is a war for the survival of democracy. We are fighting to save a great and precious form of government for ourselves and for the world. https://teachingamericanhistory.org/document/acceptance-speech-at-the-democratic-national-convention-1936/

Alot of American citizens are losing hope in what used to be our constitution. Its being ripped apart by our new age so called government, our rights given to us by our founding fathers are being pulled from beneath our noses while we are blinded by the promise of wealth. Wealth does nothing but blind the person that holds it only to find out in the end that this same person is broke, stripped of the rights that many have fought and died for,the same rights that our country stands for, freedom, liberty and justice for all. We are at war within our own country while the rest of the world watches in awe, wondering how a country that held itself together for so long and was always ready to stand strong when called upon is now falling apart and can only stagger to its feet blinded by politics and held down by its own government. The citizens of the United States of America need to take a stand, for our constitution, for our freedom for ourselves, and for our allies and the whole world so that we may, hopefully someday, pick up the staggered legs of our homeland and make America the home we once knew,to stand tall and firm with honor and liberty so we all feel safe and can confidently say that our flag stands for our nation and our children and grandchildren can also be proud of what the United States of America stands for and what it has accomplished as well as the rest of the world. I love my country not because of what it's become but because its my home the same reason the rest of the nation should love this country, our childrens children will live, grow and learn here lets not leave them with a book of hate, discrimination, and false constitutional values to learn from. Its our rights, our freedom, this is our home so we should have a voice also.

Mr. Baloney & Chris, I agree with your writings and viewpoints. I'm at a loss to determine what side of the political spectrum you are describing; Marxist, Liberal, Libertarian, Conservative. There is a huge split in the majority of voting Americans where this country will be guided; the government is all powerful and the provider for everything to work for what you get and opportunity presents itself to those prepared to take advantage. The representatives in the majority love government, frown on liberty and freedom. Those in the minority treasure what was given us through the Constitution. Many don't care much for the founding members and creators of the Constitution and does not need to be followed or referenced. So much for our freedom and liberty. What we have become is what the founders were frightened the country would evolve into. Government would be the provider; womb to the tomb. Keep your mouth shut and stay in line, whatever wages you make are government property first, you are second in line and be satisfied with what we let you have. Small government is no longer a thought, freedom and liberty is secondary if thought of at all. We have a republic, not a democracy, and we aren't being represented well. But we think we elect representatives to reflect our values once they get to Washington, hardly ever the reality. We are losing the great country we knew to federalism on the cusp of Marxism. We are in deep...

My understanding, is that this is a constitutional democratic republic. A lot to grasp, but a balance can be sought. I realize the Facebook University has been teaching otherwise and most definitely oversimplifying along with inflaming matters. I do not identify with any of the four labels you seek to contain me in. I don't like to assume that others fit into one specific persona or set of beliefs, I think most are more complex and capable of evolving into more than a previously carved out and defined BOX. I have felt for a while that team sports conditions us into a way of thinking that disregards and classifies groups of people into the desirable and not. Essentially your running around judging what team people are on and making a determination whether they are against you or not. I'd like to think we are more interesting and capable than four boxes. Go on classifying, judging and dismissing (not to mention hating) if that works for you. It does not work for this Cat.

This republic uses democracy to refine the Constitution. It is a living document, not a static set of commandments "perfected" in a time before mechanical, agricultural and industrial multiplication. Before the interconnected yet disrespectful society attained the ability to access all knowledge, yet chose to stay ignorant, while fighting over who is "right." The founders, as much as I respect and study them, had no concept of the efficiencies we would develop, and the resulting methods for which they control, disadvantage and manipulate those without.

The supposed "Outbreak at St. Therese Church" is about as acurate as Culver's taking the place of Big Boy. You tend to step in it quite a bit.

However, I'm always on the right side of the issue. You, not so much, even though you think you're the brightest person in West Michigan and probably the U.S.!
