Allegan County Covid rates decline, but deaths are up

The death toll from the Coronavirus in Allegan County has climbed by four more since Friday, reaching a total of 138 since the pandemic began 13 months ago.

However, statistics demonstrate a mixed bag, as the rate of daily new cases over the past seven days has dropped below 30 for the first time since early April. The rate was 29.4, down from 36.7 just a few days before and a significant decrease from the high of 75.6 reported by county health officials on April 20. They also have noted that statistically death numbers lag behind all other data.

The Wayland Board of Education in a special meeting last Friday decided to return Wayland Middle School to the hybrid plan of instruction starting this coming week for the rest of the academic year because 11 Covid cases were reported for that school. Wayland High School last month also was forced to go back to the hybrid model.

The hybrid involves half of the student body attend in-person classes Mondays and Thursday, the other half Tuesdays and Fridays and Wednesdays set aside for virtual instruction.

Statistic show the positivity rate for new cases over the past two weeks has been 16.6 percent and hospitalizations increased by two to 229 since Friday.

There have been 10,734 cases of the virus in Allegan County and 9,158 patients have been designated as recovered.

Martin and Hopkins schools have continued in-person instruction this spring and have reported few if any problems.
