Alvin Vander Ploeg, described most recently as a gentlemanly regular at the Clippers Cafe in Martin and dedicated Marine Corps veteran, peacefully died Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the age of 91.
Alvin served in the United States Marine Corps. After his military service, he spent 30 years working at UpJohn Pharmaceuticals.
Born Nov. 16, 1931, Alvin lived a life filled with love, devotion and service to his country and community. He is survived by his loving children, Renae (Rick) Levett and Bernie (Lori) Vander Ploeg, his four grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Alvin was also a cherished brother to Judy (David) Oglesbee and Duane (Darlene) Vander Ploeg.
Alvin was preceded in passing by his beloved wife, Bernardine, his parents, six sisters, and seven brothers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Wings of Hope Hospice, an organization that provides compassionate end-of-life care.
Alvin will be laid to rest with his wife at South Martin Cemetery during a private committal service.
