Amanda Rodriguez of Hastings was sworn in Monday night as the new Wayland City Clerk.

Rodriguez was selected among 88 candidates who applied for the job, according to City Manager Erik Wilson. She succeeds Leann Claussen, who had to step down late last year because of medical issues. Joyce Jenkins filled in as interim clerk until this month.

The new clerk told council members she’s had a variety of experiences, most recently as a bookkeeper for 25 hotels. She at one time was office manager at the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department while living in Marshall.

Closer to this position in Wayland, she was clerk for the Village of Nashville.

“I’m excited to be here,” she said. “I’ve been looking around. Wayland a lot since I applied.”

Rodriguez will begin duties next Monday, Feb. 23.

In other business at Monday night’s meeting, the council:

  • Was told by utilities director David Paul that the city now is going to flushing hydrants every two weeks after a water problem surfaced because of an aging water main.
  • Approved the appointment of Michael Griffith to the local Board of Review.
