Area fire departments faced daunting challenges Sunday in fighting a fatal structure fire on Division just north of the Rock ‘N Bowl facility in Leighton Township.

Leighton, Dorr and Wayland/Yankee Springs firefighters had to battle icy and snowy conditions while putting out the blaze.

One man is dead as a result of the electrical fire just north of Wayland. His name has not yet been released.

Allegan County Undersheriff Mike Larsen the blaze fire broke out at about 5 p.m. on 11th Street just north of 137th Street.

An investigation by Michigan State Police and the Leighton Township Fire Department is continuing.

A spokesman from the Leighton department said, “Leighton FD was on a very long incident in poor conditions. We are very appreciative of the teamwork provided from Wayland/Yankee FD, Dorr FD, ACSD, MSP, WAEMS and Allegan Dispatch. We couldn’t have done it without everyone working together.”

Appreciation also was extended to to the American Red Cross for volunteers who provided coffee and food and the Wayland McDonald’s for donating food for the entire team.
